The pops and uncle finally took my brother and I to the Burro Canyon Shooting Range where they taught us how to shoot 9mm and 45mm pistols, a 22 caliber rifle, and a 12 gauge Beretta shotgun. In addition to being an effective form of stress relief, learning how to properly handle and fire a gun definitely increased my respect for them. Though I highly doubt that I'd ever need to use a gun for self-defense I can confidently boast that as a first-timer, I fired with 70% accuracy. It was also a rare sight to see my dad, uncle, or bro miss a target (note the tiny orange shattered specks). I can't wait to use the AR-15. And once my uncle starts hunting, I can finally get my hands on some deer antlers.

I'm always excited to receive tours from friends around their natural habitats. Indeed, there's a strong relationship between a person's identity and environment while growing up. Because I moved around a lot as a child, I often considered it a disadvantage to not have a singular hometown; rather, having various hometown(s) scattered around Norcal and Socal. I've only recently come to appreciate such inconstancies as contributors to my adaptability to change. Although I admit that always being forced to make new friends has increased my tolerance of different personalities, it has also given me more insight as to the type of people I want to continue surrounding myself with, especially after college.

Anyhoo, this past Tuesday a future citizen of Cascadia gave me a tour of his lovely hometown, Los Alamitos, which is only a few miles away from the place I most often refer to as home. After taking me to Nick's Deli for yummay breakfast burritos, we visited Gum "Drove?" Grove to do what Roos and Piglets do best: take pictures. It's always pleasing to see how our dissimilar styles portray the same environment from two different perspectives. Our photoescapades have definitely taught me so much about composition and lighting. The last picture is my favorite because it was taken minutes before Keith realized he locked his car keys in his trunk. Oh, bother.

His work initially sparked my interest in the field; and being naturally drawn to aesthetics, at one point I even considered pursuing architecture as a future career. With 95% of my dental school applications completed, I'm happy to say that I finally have the time (and equipment) to start updating my blog again. I have been graciously allowed a one month vacation, which I chose to spend at home, before working full time again in LA. I was oh so inspired by the remarkable talent of Terry "Keith"ardson Tio (as usual) that I've decided to start a similar project of my own by imitating Terry Richardson's b&ws--not exactly part of his professional work, but still convey the TR essence. I've always admired Terry Richardson's portraits because they're so casual and yet seem to capture the subject's personality with ease. So to start, I took several head-shots of my beautiful roomies. Each picture was taken with my FM 50mm film lens, a makeshift spotlight as substitute for a flash, and minimal editing.

In retrospect: winter quarter consisted of a graduate class at the dental school, a seminar on LA immigrants, a chemistry course in bionanotechnology (which is not as interesting as it sounds), and the toughest chemistry lab at UCLA with a professor notorious for failing half the class every quarter. I'm happy to say that I not only survived, but came out with a few burns AND a cuatro punto cero. Yay, new heels!
